First of all, one must answer what a cover is. It is the vertical distance between the top of the steel in a structure and the top of the pavement including the pavement layers. The minimum value depends on many factors. However, the two most important ones are: the span of the structure and the type of variable load for which the facility should be designed.
This is a mix of experience and calculation. We know that steel is long lasting and durable. We know that the Eiffel Tower has stood for over 130 years, the Sydney harbour bridge for nearly 100 years. Of course, none of us has been around for 100 years to see how buried corrugated steel structures last and these are structures buried in a soil environment, predicting the durability of our structures takes a combination of engineering analysis, consideration of environmental factors and the correct material selection. There are standard formulas and calculations which we carry out, and these are recognised methods, the results of which are accepted by engineers.
The installation time varies from project to project and size of them.
So, the installation time can take from a couple of hours on the smaller solution to a couple of weeks on the bigger.
But compared to other solutions our tanks are really quick to install.
When we design the pipes there is a time contribution from the galvanised coating and also an allowance of sacrificial steel, so it is expected by design that the galvanised surface ages.
